Amanda Bynes tweets topless photo, friends beg for help

The Amanda Bynes saga took another scary turn in the late night hours Wednesday night when actress Jenny McCarthy tweeted that police were at the troubled star's home in New York City.

"Police are at @AmandaBynes house. I hope they get her help. Enough of this circus. She needs help," McCarthy wrote.

The source of McCarthy's information? Apparently she was quoting from the tweets of Bynes' former publicist Jonathan Jaxson, who had tweeted: "I just spoke to@AmandaBynes and she is soooo messed up on drugs and please @NY_POLICE find her and help her! I don't know her address!"

The online kerfuffle came soon after Bynes had posted topless photos of herself on Twitter.

Those pics came after Tuesday night's shots in which she was similarly unclothed, but at least still wearing a bra.

PHOTOS: More Bynes Twitpics.

In the preceding weeks, Bynes, 27, had been spotted wandering strangely around New York City, shaving half her head, tweeting obscene things about her affection for musician Drake, posting videos of herself mumbling in front of the mirror.

Bynes' behavior reportedly has the children in her apartment building scared, too.

And while some of her actions are reminiscent of a 2007 Britney Spears, whose very public meltdown culminated in her shaving her own head and later led to -- and still requires -- a legal conservatorship, one court expert told FOX411's Pop Tarts column earlier this week that  there is nothing like that in the works for Bynes.

"There are two main standards that courts look at as far as conservatorships. The first is the person a danger to themselves  -- Spears was and demonstrated that often -- and the second is whether the person a danger to society. Britney Spears was, and to her two children as well," legal consultant and alternative sentencing expert Wendy Feldman. "Amanda seems to have a serious mental illness, but that does not meet the standard in court. There is no record of suicide attempts or drug overdoses."

At least for now.

Maybe this explains why Amanda Bynes hasn't been exhibiting the most healthy behavior lately: she has an eating disorder.

SODAHEAD SLIDESHOW: See the most candid celebrity eating disorder confessions.

Bynes hasn't exactly been the best role model in recent months, but eating disorders are very serious and can even be fatal, which is why we admire celebs who come forward and talk about their struggles with anorexia, bulimia and other disorders.

This includes Lady Gaga, who admitted last year to having suffered from "bulimia and anorexia since I was 15."

And Portia de Rossi, who discussed her history of anorexia and bulimia in her memoir "Unbearable Lightness."

Plenty of other stars have opened up about starving themselves, as well as binging and purging. "X Factor" judge Demi Lovato confessed to struggling with eating disorders and self-harm; "Sopranos" actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler said exercise bulimia brought her to the verge of contemplating suicide.

In 2010, Snooki told OK! magazine she coped with eating disorders as she tried to maintain a small size as a high school cheerleader. "I just started eating salads and salads,” she said. “Then I got to a point where I was just eating a cracker a day. And I was down to 80 pounds."

Last year, former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger told VH1's "Behind the Music" about her longtime struggle with bulimia.

And Katie Couric was bulimic in college, she said on her talk show "Katie" last year. "I know this rigidity, this feeling that if you eat one thing that's wrong, you're full of self-loathing and then you punish yourself. Whether it's one cookie or a stick of gum that isn't sugarless . . . sometimes [I would] beat myself up for that," she said.

For a while there it seemed like Amanda Bynes had fallen off the radar.

Now a series of strange tweets have put the once- A-List actress back on the map, for all the wrong reasons.

In a raunchy post early Friday morning, Bynes wrote a vulgar, sexual message about rapper Drake that had fans buzzing. The post had been retweeted more than 13,000 times within 12 hours of her posting it.

Many of Bynes’ 328,121 followers commented on the racy post. Some found it humorous while others were appalled.

“She’s gone crazy!” one user commented on the tweet.

“She has to be hacked or [something],” another wrote.

Others wrote that the actress had clearly changed a lot from her days on Nickelodeon’s “All That.”

But it’s been a long time since Bynes’ Hollywood star shone that bright.

Her last memorable acting role was in “Hairspray” back in 2007, though she did make an appearance in 2010’s “Easy A.”

A series of strange photos of the former child star have put her back in the limelight, too.

Recent images of Bynes show her with strange facial piercings—silver studs in each of her dimpled cheeks—and overdone makeup and hair.

Additional tweets paired with her new look are just as strange. In a slew of posts over the last several days, the actress has seemingly rambled about tofu, socks, baby corn, and, again, Drake.

About a week ago Bynes began posting about the singer, calling him a “hot fellow” and sharing photos of him.

Bynes was also rumored to have been recently booted from her New York City apartment.

The actress reportedly fired her management team in 2012. The star’s former reps did not return FOX 411’s request for comment.
