DASH TO DRILL: Dakota Oil and Gas Fields Far Bigger Than Believed

Energy companies are lining up for their shot to drill in the Dakotas and Montana after a new government report revealed that a massive geological formation stretching across the states contains twice the oil and three times the amount of natural gas than was originally believed.

While the new estimate is drawing smaller companies to the game, the larger players like Schlumberger, Halliburton and Continental Resources are pushing forward with ambitious multi-year plans to stake their claim in the industry.

Continental recently announced a five-year plan to triple its production by 2017. The company’s growth is based on success in North Dakota and Montana as well as in parts of Oklahoma.

The dash to drill follows news from the government on how much more oil and natural gas there is to tap.

“These world-class formations contain even more energy resource potential than previously understood, which is important information as we continue to reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign sources of oil,” newly confirmed Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said Tuesday in a statement.

The new U.S. Geological Survey estimates there are 7.4 billion barrels of oil, 6.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 0.53 billion barrels of natural gas liquids in the Bakken and Three Forks Formations in the Williston Basin Province of Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Since 2008, close to 450 million barrels of oil have been produced in the area and if the government estimates are correct, that leaves billions of barrels of oil and trillions more cubic feet of natural gas left for the taking.

That’s good news for North Dakota -- a state that’s already reaped big benefits from the oil boom and has one of the strongest state economies in the country coupled with an exceptionally low unemployment rate. Tax revenues from natural gas and oil hit $1 billion last year in North Dakota and the state is on track to double that number next year.

Republican Sen. John Hoeven believes numbers from the new USGS survey will draw even more developers to the area.

“This will mean a lot of jobs,” he told FoxNews.com. “Financially we are already very strong, we have no debt, but this will mean a lot more. Stores, restaurants, movie theaters – we’ll have to build and we’ll have to hire workers.”

The competition to court employees is already on at the McDonalds in Dickinson, N.D. where prospective hires are being lured in with $300 signing bonuses, Hoeven said.

Calls to McDonalds Corp. for comment were not immediately returned.

Some environmental experts like John Harju, associate director for research with the Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota, believe the possibilities are even greater than what the government forecasts.

“Like any of these USGS estimates, think of them as a milemarker that’s well behind you in the rearview mirror,” he told the Grand Forks Herald in North Dakota.

Still, not everyone is as gung-ho as Hoeven about drilling for natural gas, and the controversial process known as fracking used to access it.

The government hopes to calm some opposition to natural gas by releasing a set of draft rules to regulate hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. The process involves injecting a high-pressure mix of water, sand and chemicals deep into rock formations to release trapped oil and gas.

Supporters say the drilling method should continue and is credited for the country’s domestic energy boom. They say fracking gives the country a chance to cut its dependence on foreign oil.

Environmental groups have long objected to the practice and say it pollutes the groundwater and kills crops and livestock. They also argue that fracking releases heat-trapping methane gas into the air.

But in mid-April, the Environmental Protection Agency dramatically lowered its estimate of how much methane leaks during natural gas production. The agency said that tighter pollution controls put in place by the industry from 1990 to 2010 cut the country’s average of methane emissions by more than 850 million metric tons overall, or about 41.6 million metric tons annually. That’s a 20 percent decrease from previous EPA estimates – a decrease that took place as natural gas production in the country grew by nearly 40 percent in the past two decades.

It is not clear exactly when the government will release its fracking regulations, but it is expected in the next few weeks.

'TIRED OF RUNNING': Missing Mom Presumed Dead Is Found in Florida

An April 26, 2013 photo taken by the Monroe County, Fla. Sheriff's Office and released by the Lititz Borough, Pa. Police, is of Brenda Heist.AP/Lititz Borough Police

A central Pennsylvania woman who mysteriously disappeared after dropping off her children for school 11 years ago has surfaced in Florida, telling police she traveled there on a whim with homeless hitchhikers, slept under bridges and survived by scavenging food and panhandling, authorities said Wednesday.

Brenda Heist, 54, had been declared legally dead, Lititz Borough Police Det. John Schofield said. The detective said he met with her in Florida on Monday and she expressed shame and apologized for what she did to her family.

Heist was going through an amicable divorce in 2002 when she was turned down for housing assistance, which led her to despair. She was crying in a park when two women and a man befriended her, then invited her to join them as they began a monthlong hitchhiking journey to south Florida, Schofield said.

Her ex-husband Lee Heist, who got the courts to declare her legally dead two years ago and has remarried, said at a news conference Wednesday that he was angry because of the effect her disappearance had on their son and daughter. Lee Heist was looked at as a suspect, but cooperated with investigators, took a polygraph and was eventually cleared.

He was able to maintain a bond with the children.

"They knew that I was there, and I loved them and would take care of them," he said.

He said his ex-wife and their children have expressed a desire to speak with each other, but for now they are taking things slowly.

Her identity came to light after she turned herself in to Monroe County sheriff's deputies in Key Largo, Fla., on Friday, and informed them she was a missing person. She told them she was on probation and had recently been arrested under a name different from her real name. The nature of those charges was not clear in a Monroe County sheriff's office report released late Monday.

Schofield said she was expected to be released from police custody in Florida and was likely to spend some time with a brother in that state before moving in with her mother in Texas.

"She has a birth certificate and a death certificate so she's got a long ways to make this right again," Schofield said. "She's got to take it slow with her family, I'm sure, and it's going to be a long process."

Inside her Lititz home the day she disappeared, dinner was defrosting and the laundry was half done. Police located her car in neighboring York County but none of her personal belongings were missing.

When Schofield called recently to meet with her ex-husband and their daughter, they assumed he would be notifying them that her remains were found, the detective said.

Lee Heist said he struggled financially after his wife disappeared, quitting his job and losing his home. She had been a bookkeeper at a car dealership.

"There were people in the neighborhood who would not allow their children to play with my children" because he had been a suspect, he said.

Brenda Heist had been homeless for the past two years, most recently living in a tent community run by a social service agency.

"She said she was at the end of her rope, she was tired of running," Schofield said.

For about seven years she lived with a man in a camper in Key West and worked odd jobs. Schofield said she never had access to a computer and never checked to see if she was being sought, although she assumed she was.

The Heists' daughter is now a 19-year-old West Chester University sophomore, and their son, 23, recently graduated from the same college and is pursuing a law-enforcement career. The school is about 30 miles west of Philadelphia.

Schofield said police in Florida were trying to sort out a warrant-related issue before releasing Brenda Heist. Details about any charges, and whether she was being held on an active warrant, were not available from police in Florida or Pennsylvania.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said Heist was in "protective custody," although not with the office. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to a request by The Associated Press for a way to contact her.

Police in Lititz said the investigation eventually involved dozens of detectives, and although the trail had grown cold the case had never been forgotten, with Heist's picture tacked to a wall at police headquarters.

Lee Heist said he and the children also remembered, and observed anniversaries. Her valuables were returned to her mother years ago, he said.

DOWN TO THE WIRE: Immigrant Busted at Border After Tango With Fence

A suspected illegal immigrant was rescued Tuesday by San Diego firefighters after becoming ensnared in the razor wire on top of a fence at the U.S.-Mexico border, Fox5SanDiego.com reported.

Border Patrol agents saw the man stuck in the fence east of Otay Mesa just before 3:45 p.m., and they called the San Diego Fire Department, the report said. It took rescuers more than an hour to free the man stuck some 20 feet above the ground. The undocumented man was evaluated by EMTs at the scene and was not injured. He was handed over to border agents and taken into custody, the report said.

The concertina wire on top of the fence is two rows deep and designed to make moving forward or backward excruciatingly painful. One strategy border crossers use to scale the fence successfully is to employ a ladder and then drape a blanket over the razor wire.

"The secondary fence is designed to slow, to impede the pedestrian traffic," Ken Hamill, a border agent, told Fox5SanDiego.com. Adding just a few minutes to the climb enables authorities to swoop in.

Reports of an individual stuck on the fence is not particularly uncommon. In the past year, 21 people have had to be rescued while attempting to cross the border, Border Patrol told the station. In October, for example, a jeep got stuck on the wall in Yuma, Ariz.

Gay footballers scared to come out

John Amaechi

The advice Englishman John Amaechi gave to Jason Collins before the NBA veteran came out is very different to what he tells the gay football players he knows in England's Barclays Premier League.

"The NBA is light years ahead of football," Amaechi said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

"There is no doubt about that."

Amaechi became the first openly gay former NBA player in 2007, three years after retiring. In the month before his public announcement on Monday, Collins spoke to him about his decision.

"I told him there isn't anything negative about it," Amaechi said. "Being out is better than being in - unreservedly."

In American sports maybe. But not in football - particularly in England, according to Amaechi. Being an Englishman and one of the country's leading equality campaigners, he is qualified to offer his opinion.

"If it wanted to be a better, more progressive organisation that supported diversity, not because it looks pretty when you put it on the back of your annual report ... it could be," Amaechi said.

"It has the resources. It doesn't want to get rid of the dinosaur, so the dinosaurs continue to roar through the hallways of football, making sure that everyone knows how you have to behave.

"Let's face it. You are better off being the kind of football player who bites like a 5-year-old than a gay player in football. One would get you less ridicule from the powers that be. It's shocking to me."

Amaechi's comments allude to Liverpool forward Luis Suarez's bite a week ago, and they carry weight. He is the figurehead many gay football players in England are turning to for advice - in private, afraid to become front-page news.

Justin Fashanu was the first leading British player to come out publicly, acknowledging he was gay in 1990. The former Nottingham Forest and Norwich City forward's life ended in 1998 at age 37 when he was found hanged in a London garage.

The next notable player to come out was Robbie Rogers, a former member of the U.S. national team who had been playing for Leeds. Aged only 25, he felt he had to retire at the same time he made his announcement in February.

Asked if any privately gay players had contacted him like Collins, Amaechi replied: "Yes, a few."

"There are plenty of them who are already out, who have come out to some of their teammates," he added. "But they just don't want (to in public). They don't have any faith in football to do its job, to do its duty."

Fans of the second-tier English club Brighton recently published a dossier highlighting the constant homophobic abuse they face at matches. The southern city is known for its gay and lesbian community.

Faced with hostile crowds and the macho world of locker rooms, players are reluctant to come out. Amaechi said the gay players he knows can be more open at home.

"They are out in the way that most people are out, in that people they love and that people who care about them know that they are gay," Amaechi said. "But random strangers don't know that they are gay. It is quite a huge expectation that you put on people, you expect them essentially to wear a T-shirt that says 'By the way I'm gay' every day.

"There is something I can tell you from experience quite weird about it."

In response to Amaechi's criticism, the English Football Association defended its vigor in tackling homophobia, pointing to its "Opening Doors and Joining In" campaign that marked its first anniversary earlier this month with an event at the House of Commons.

"Opening Doors has received positive feedback inside Westminster and from the likes of Stonewall FC, the country's first ever gay football club, while both Graeme Le Saux and West Ham's Matt Jarvis have lent their support to The FA's work in this area," FA spokesman Scott Field said.

Le Saux is a former English national team defender who faced abuse during his career over baseless claims about his sexuality.

Jarvis, who is heterosexual and married, posed topless on the cover of a gay magazine recently in a bid show support for the gay community.

Amaechi stresses the need to move away from preconceptions.

"In Britain is the idea that real men - straight men - don't read books, must whistle at women and objectify them and all kinds of crazy stuff that is not particularly helpful," he said.

He offers a note of caution about the prospect of current players emulating Collins' public announcement.

"With football, they've got so far to go," he said. "That's almost a bridge too far."

Summer loving: top transfer targets

Gareth Bale

Three big storylines ... Wayne Rooney, Gareth Bale and Robert Lewandowski. Source:AAP

We?ve all talked about it for months. Now Jose has well and truly let the cat out of the bag.

The Real Madrid boss all but gave a plea for Roman Abramovich to come and rescue him from the Santiago Bernabeu and take him back to his favourite surrounds at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking after his side’s UEFA Champions League elimination at the hands of Borussia Dortmund, Mourinho said: "I want to be where people love me".

We’re still a month away from the summer transfer window opening, but that hasn't stopped feverish speculation surrounding futures of both players and managers across the globe.

Even Dortmund, Champions League final bound, are having their end of season exploits being overshadowed by transfer news.

Star midfielder Mario Gotze has already declared he will move to Bayern Munich next season – a bitter blow to Jurgen Klopp and the UCL finalists.

Will Robert Lewandowski follow suit? What about defender Mats Hummels?

Clubs are already thinking about next season, to stay ahead of the game. Take Sir Alex Ferguson, for example. Manchester United only just sealed the manager’s 13th Premier League crown, but the boss is already looking ahead to next term.

"You have to look at the structure of the club at present, in terms of the number of first-team players we have at 23 or under," Ferguson said in his column for Inside United.

"David De Gea, Rafael, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Alex Buttner, Nick Powell, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck, Shinji Kagawa and Chicharito are 24. Jonny Evans is 25 and Wayne Rooney is hitting his peak at 27.

"Older players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand may be coming towards the end of their careers, but these younger players are the foundation for the next five or six years, irrespective of the players breaking through, like Adnan Januzaj, the Belgian boy, who's really looking very good.

"Hopefully the players we bring into the club in the next year or so will be of the quality we need. We're competitive in the market - we're not Chelsea or Manchester City in terms of money but we're competitive.

"We've been doing a bit of work on that over the last three or four months, targeting who the players are that we feel could enhance us, make us better or help us maintain the level we're at."

It’s going to be a busy off-season. Even the A-League isn’t immune, with Graham Arnold the centre of speculation on the coaching front, while Robbie Kruse and Marco Rojas on the cusp of big Bundesliga moves.

Our Rumour Mill and Paper Talks will continue to work in overdrive over the next few months. But which move will dominate football pages across the globe – and become the Robin van Persie of 2013-2014?

Here’s 10 names to kick us off.

Jose Mourinho

The Special One hasn’t conquered his final frontier of a UEFA Champions League crown in Spain, but he’s had enough. Unloved. Unappreciated. Disrespected. Life’s tough for the former Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan boss. Some thought he was destined to progress to Manchester United or even the Portugal national team after conquering Madrid. Instead, it looks like he’ll run back to home comforts at Chelsea to try and return the club to the heights he previously delivered.

Roberto Mancini

Will an FA Cup triumph be enough to save the Italian, who slumped in the Premier League and failed in the UCL? Each week delivers a different verdict as to whether the Manchester City boss will get the chance to make amends. This week, Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini is being heavily linked with a move to Etihad Stadium.

Radamel Falcao

Chelsea? Manchester United? Manchester City? Paris Saint Germain? Bayern Munich? Real Madrid? Anyone take your fancy, Radamel? The Atletico Madrid striker is no stranger to rumours. English clubs have yearned to lure him to the EPL, but an imperious strike rate – and an ability to score headline grabbing goals – will ensure Europe’s biggest clubs continue clamouring for his signature.

Neymar

Will the Brazilian please declare his hand? Links with Barcelona are becoming tiresome. Is the prodigious talent staying in Brazil until the World Cup, or with overtures from Catalonia finally tempt the Santos starlet? Will England tempt him, or will he learn from compatriots who have struggled with the rough, tumble and spotlight of the Premier League? The usual suspects will have followed his recent rejection of a contract extension, but will anyone prize the £32million talent away this summer?

Frank Lampard

Lampard and Terry. Each time it looks like their time at Chelsea is up, no one can quite cut them adrift, and it wouldn’t be Chelsea with Mourinho but without his two favourites. Lampard has spent plenty of time on the bench this term but has still produced vital goals, moving to one goal behind Bobby Tambling's club record of 202 goals. The Independent reports that a new one-year deal is imminent for a player hoping to remain in the England set-up. He’s been linked with the MLS, and bizarrely, even Manchester United at times this season. It’s an important decision for Chelsea.

Robert Lewandowski

Man-of-the-moment Robert Lewandowski is interested in testing himself in England - but not yet, according to his agent. But does that mean Dortmund will lose him to Bayern, following Gotze, or will they put their foot down and make him see out his contract? German newspaper Bild even produced a bizarre report saying Jose Mourinho has texted the Polish striker about joining him at Chelsea! See, it really is a silly season. The star striker is one of the real hot properties this summer.

Edinson Cavani

The Napoli striker joins Lewandowski and Falcao as prime targets this summer. Manchester City have long been linked, as Mancini looks to re-load his strike-force. Usual suspects Real Madrid and PSG are also linked with the prodigious striker.

Wayne Rooney

This is an interesting one. Read between the lines of Fergie’s recent comments, and Rooney looks like staying at Manchester United. But with RVP’s success and the likelihood that they’ll lure another striker, where does that leave the England star? Once on a pedestal with the world’s top players, will he be content to remain second-fiddle – and in a different role – at Old Trafford? England want to see more from their ‘talisman’. Speculation about his future will not subside until he re-signs.

Luis Suarez

Liverpool won’t sell the mischievous Uruguayan, but will Champions League football or a desire to leave the insatiable attention on him in England tempt him to go abroad? Pep Guardiola has already been linked with the striker at Bayern Munich. He’s got three years on his contract – will Liverpool’s loyalty towards him through troubled times influence his commitment?

Gareth Bale

Tottenham are on the cusp of being a serious player in the top tier of English football – but that could all come spiralling apart if Bale departs. Champions League football looks like being enough to keep him at White Hart Lane, but it’s hard to see him staying for another stint at the Europa League. With praise like this from Zinedine Zidane, it's hard to see how Spurs will hold off overtures from a club like Madrid or another powerhouse."After the season he has just had - and still being so young of course Gareth Bale is going to be one of the most expensive players in the world if he decides to move. 'Tottenham could command £40million, £50m, maybe even £60m for him. It is a lot of money - but there are maybe three or four teams in the world that can pay that sort of transfer fee - and it wont put them off."

Mountain Dew ad yanked after many find it racist, misogynist

  • mountain dew ad 660.jpg

PepsiCo pulled an online ad for Mountain Dew that was criticized for portraying racial stereotypes and making light of violence toward women.

In the 60-second spot developed by African-American rapper Tyler, The Creator, a battered white woman on crutches is urged by an officer to identify a suspect out of a lineup of black men. A goat character known as Felicia is included in the lineup.

The goat makes threatening remarks to the woman such as "Ya better not snitch on a player" and "Keep ya mouth shut." She eventually screams "I can't do this, no no no!" and runs away.

The word "do" is in apparent reference to the soft drink's "Dew It" slogan.

PepsiCo Inc., based in Purchase, N.Y., apologized in a statement and said it understood how the ad could be offensive.

Jen Ryan, a spokeswoman for PepsiCo, said the company was alerted on Tuesday by its consumer relations team that some people found the ad offensive. The company immediately decided to take down the spot and was told by Tyler that he would remove it from his YouTube channel as well, she said.

The ad was never intended to air on TV, Ryan said.

A publicist for Tyler, the Creator did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. His raps have been criticized for being misogynistic and homophobic at times but he has also expressed support for the singer Frank Ocean when he revealed he was bisexual.

Mountain Dew, known for its neon yellow color and higher caffeine content, is marketed toward younger men.
